White cabinets have long been a staple in contemporary kitchens. They add a fresh, clean dimension to a space’s design that is versatile and enduring. Here, five different Sweeten kitchens that use white as their main color palette for a timeless look. We love that these white kitchen ideas were executed uniquely —but all still have a refreshing, crisp result.

Sweeten matches home renovation projects with vetted general contractors, offering advice, support, and financial protection—at no cost to the homeowner.

White Kitchen Idea 1: From outdated ’80s to modern-day, thanks to textures

The 80s-style cabinetry and tile just weren’t cutting it, so Erin and Jonathan turned to Sweeten to find a contractor who could help make their West Village apartment more “them.” The built-in island did the trick as did the white design scheme. From the white chevron backsplash to the white shaker cabinets to the marble-like quartz countertop, white is everywhere—a modern take on their decades-old space. “Now when we walk in the door, it’s a breath of fresh air,” Jonathan said.

White Kitchen Idea 2: White cabinets and more storage make for a happier home

It’s not an uncommon story: Couple moves into a place, they are excited, but not about their kitchen. For Elizabeth and Martin, this story rang true. They needed to improve the functionality and look of their small galley kitchen so they sought out a design-build firm through Sweeten. They wanted a clean and classic kitchen, free of clutter, and with plenty of prep space. And that’s exactly what they got.

Elizabeth and Martin worked with the designer to dream up practical storage solutions,  like the microwave cabinet and built-in paper towel holder. The peninsula breakfast bar seats four to six and offers additional storage, too. They also shopped with their designer to pick out materials. They chose copper cabinet hardware that pops against the white custom cabinets and a lava stone backsplash and quartz countertop.

Their new space reinvigorated Martin’s love for cooking and unlike pre-renovation, the couple actually enjoys spending time together in their kitchen now.

White Kitchen Idea 3: A white, clean, and classic kitchen

The goal: a clean and classic kitchen. This is what Jo, a product designer, set out to accomplish when she started renovating her apartment. She was very hands-on in picking out all the materials. She wanted a neutral kitchen that could make her colorful dishware pop. (Hello, white cabinets!) “I’m very changeable in terms of my taste, I’m always looking to update my home accessories,” says Jo.

Jo worked with Sweeten to realize her dream kitchen. She curated the materials, from flooring to appliances, taking inspiration from her travels. She added cork floors, bamboo shelves, and a bamboo drying rack above the sink.  And white cabinets and a white glass backsplash tell the design story.

“I love being in the new space, it’s enabled me to have more family celebrations,” says Jo.

White Kitchen Idea 4: Scandinavian minimalism with white kitchen cabinets as the star

When Jen bought her 1937 co-op in Brooklyn, she wanted to redo the kitchen to match her style, which is anything but run-of-the-mill. But that’s exactly what was there: brown cabinets, a light floor, and dark countertops. “I’m a huge fan of the simple, Scandinavian vibe,” she said. Scandinavian style features neutral calming colors, simple design, and warm touches.

With the help of a Sweeten contractor, Jen reimagined the galley kitchen by tearing down a wall. And then installing flat-panel, white kitchen cabinets, open white shelving, and Caesarstone countertops.

I’m still stunned by how transformed the space is,” she says. “Frankly, I never want to leave my apartment.”

White Kitchen Idea 5: White lightens up a galley kitchen

The location was perfect (Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn) but the kitchen was not. It was a sad hue of brown: brown cabinets, brown backsplash, and brownish countertop. To refresh this dated look,  Natalia and Daniel decided to renovate. And they needed to do it rather quickly as they had a baby on the way.

Since the space was tight, they knew that a light color would open it up. Enter, the white cabinets and the gray-and-white backsplash. They also used open shelving and narrow cabinets to make the space appear larger. Now they can enjoy their new kitchen while they cater to their little one.
